More Google reviews for restaurants

Guests decide on their phone where to eat tonight. The Spotstar card takes happy guests to your Google review page with one tap. Spotstar replies to the reviews and shows you what guests write about food, service and waiting times.

Why Google reviews matter for restaurants

Anyone looking for a restaurant, in their own neighbourhood or in a city they don't know, opens Google Maps. Stars, the number of reviews and the latest comments sit right next to the name. A restaurant with few or old reviews looks like a risk, even when the kitchen is excellent.

There is also an imbalance. A guest who waited 40 minutes for their food writes about it that same evening. The twenty tables where everything went well go home and write nothing. Your profile then shows the exception instead of a normal evening.

Where the card goes in a restaurant

The best moment is when the guest is happy and already has their phone in their hand.

  1. 1

    With the bill

The card arrives in the bill folder or on the tray. The guest has eaten, is waiting for the card reader and has a moment to spare.

  2. 2

    On the table

As a small stand next to the salt and pepper. This suits places where guests stay a while.

  3. 3

    At the counter

For lunch service and for guests who collect their food and pay at the till.

  4. 4

    One sentence from your staff

“If you enjoyed it, we'd be glad of a review.” That is all it takes. Never ask for a particular star rating and never pressure anyone. Both go against Google's policies.

What restaurant guests write about

A handful of themes come up again and again in restaurant reviews. Spotstar sorts your reviews into themes like these and shows what is praised and what is criticised.

  • Taste and quality of the dishes
  • Friendly, attentive service
  • Waiting for a table, the food and the bill
  • Price and portion size
  • Atmosphere and noise
  • Cleanliness, including the toilets

You can see, for example, whether complaints about waiting only come up at weekends, or whether one dish is praised again and again.

Example: replying to a restaurant review

4 of 5 stars

The pasta was wonderful and our waiter very attentive. But on Saturday we waited almost 40 minutes for our mains.

Reply from the restaurant

Thank you for visiting and for the kind words about our kitchen and service. We are sorry about the long wait on Saturday. We now have more people in the kitchen on busy evenings. We would be glad to see you again.

Invented example. Spotstar answers praise right away; by default, replies to criticism only appear after you approve them.

Common questions

Are we allowed to ask guests for a review in the restaurant?
Yes. Google allows you to ask guests for an honest review. What is not allowed: rewards such as a free espresso or a discount, pressure at the table, and asking for a particular rating. Spotstar sends every guest to the same Google page, however their evening went.
What happens to bad reviews?
They appear on Google like all the others. Spotstar does not filter anything beforehand. For criticism, Spotstar drafts a calm reply that by default only appears after you approve it. The analysis shows you whether one complaint keeps coming up.
Does Spotstar also analyse Tripadvisor or TheFork?
No. Spotstar works with Google reviews because that is where your restaurant appears in Search and in Google Maps. Spotstar does not analyse other platforms.
